FOCUS - Summer 2005

Introduction - By Dean Brown

Welcome to the latest edition of Focus, the newsletter from Performa keeping you in touch with the world of GIPS and all the latest news from Performa.

The first half of this year has seen major advances for both the Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS) and Performa.

In February we saw what was probably the biggest step forward for performance standards in a number of years with the approval of the 2006 version of GIPS. One of the reasons for it being such a significant step is that it seeks to address the issues created by the proliferation of Country Versions of GIPS (CVGs) that have developed over the past five years, by returning to the principle of a single global standard. The adoption of this version by the various country sponsors is expected to take place gradually throughout 2005, with the various strains disappearing at the end of 2005.

And in April, Performa was pleased to introduce our first ever electronic version of this newsletter, eFocus. It is our intention that eFocus will replace two of the four publications of Focus each year, and will be distributed by email. Each copy of Focus and its respective content is held on our website www.performa.co.uk, whereas the eFocus email provides direct web links to its respective articles. Primarily, this allows us to provide our readers with more timely information on the world of GIPS and Performa; it also adheres to Performa's ethics with respect to the environment by partially moving from a paper to an electronic medium.

May I take this opportunity to thank David Flint of HSBC for his guest article which takes an interesting look at the future of CVGs. I do hope you enjoy this edition of Focus.
